How to Wash & Care for Waterproof Hooded Scarves & Rain Hoods

Proper care helps a waterproof hooded scarf keep its water-repellent finish, structured shape, and soft lining for longer. Use this guide for quilted, insulated, and satin-lined rain hoods and waterproof hooded scarves.

Important: Always check the care label on your item first. Product-specific instructions take priority over the general guidance below.

Quick Care Guide

1
Check the care label
Follow the instructions made for that specific item.
2
Spot-clean first
Small marks can often be removed with a damp cloth, without a full wash.
3
Wash cool & gentle
Use cold or cool water, generally no warmer than 30°C / 86°F, and a mild detergent.
4
No softener or bleach
Fabric softener and bleach can reduce the water-repellent finish.
5
Air dry
Dry away from radiators, heaters, and strong direct sunlight.
6
Store fully dry
Keep the hood loosely folded in a dry, breathable place.

After Wearing in Rain or Snow

Shake off excess water and let the hooded scarf dry completely before folding or packing it into a bag. Open the zipper and loosen the drawstring so air can reach the inside and the lining. Avoid drying it on a radiator or heater, as high heat can affect the outer fabric, the finish, and the insulation.

How to Spot-Clean

  1. Use a soft, damp cloth with cool water and a drop of mild detergent.
  2. Dab gently rather than rubbing hard, especially on satin lining.
  3. Wipe with clean water to remove any detergent residue.
  4. Let it air dry fully before storing.

How to Wash a Waterproof Hooded Scarf

  1. Read the label. Some pieces are hand-wash only, while others may allow a gentle machine cycle.
  2. Close zippers and fasten buttons to reduce friction and protect the fabric.
  3. Use cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. If machine washing is permitted, choose a delicate cycle with a low spin speed; a laundry bag adds protection.
  4. Avoid fabric softener, bleach, and stain removers with harsh chemicals. They can leave residue on the fabric and reduce water repellency.
  5. Rinse thoroughly so no detergent remains in the quilting or lining.
  6. Do not wring or twist. Press out water gently to keep the quilted and insulated sections even.

Drying: Keep the Shape and the Finish

Reshape the hood and collar by hand, then dry the item flat or over a wide hanger in a well-ventilated place. Turn it occasionally so insulated sections dry evenly all the way through. Avoid tumble drying and direct heat unless the care label specifically allows it.

Do not iron the outer waterproof fabric. If the label allows ironing the lining, use the lowest setting with a pressing cloth.

Care by Type

Quilted & Insulated Hooded Scarves

Gentle handling helps the quilting and insulation keep an even, structured shape. Avoid heavy agitation, high spin speeds, and squeezing. Make sure the item is completely dry inside before storing.

Satin-Lined Rain Hoods

Satin lining is smooth and delicate. Spot-clean whenever possible, dab rather than rub, and avoid rough surfaces, Velcro, and hooks during washing. Keep the lining clean and dry so it stays soft against hair.

Knitted Hooded Scarves

Knitted styles need different care. Follow our Knitwear Care Guide for wool, mohair, and acrylic knits.

Refreshing Water Repellency

Over time, frequent washing and wear can reduce how well water beads off the surface. Keeping the fabric clean helps. If water no longer beads, you can use a spray-on water-repellent treatment made for synthetic outerwear fabrics; follow the product instructions and test it on a small hidden area first.

How to Store

  • Store only when clean and completely dry.
  • Fold loosely, without sharp creases or heavy items on top, to protect the quilting and insulation.
  • Keep it in a dry, breathable place, not in a sealed plastic bag for long periods.
  • For travel, roll or fold the hood loosely and let it air out after unpacking.
One rule to remember: cool water, no softener, no high heat, and the item's own care label first.
